What is a dyslexia assessment?

A dyslexia assessment is a detailed, one-to-one evaluation that explores how a person learns, processes information, and uses reading, writing, and memory skills. It looks at how the brain works — not just what someone can or can’t do.

During the assessment, a trained specialist uses a series of standardised tests and activities to build a full picture of someone’s strengths and the areas where they may need support.
It’s not like a school test — there are no right or wrong answers. It’s simply about understanding the individual.

A full assessment can tell you:

  • Whether someone has dyslexia
  • How it affects them
  • Their cognitive strengths
  • Why certain tasks feel harder than others
  • What support, strategies, or adjustments would help them thrive
  • Whether they are eligible for specific support in school, exams, university, or the workplace

When completed by a qualified assessor, the report can be used for school support plans, exam access arrangements, university Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA), and workplace adjustments.

Above all, a dyslexia assessment offers clarity.
For many children and adults, it finally explains what they’ve been experiencing — and opens the door to support that genuinely makes a difference.
